Year 1

Miss Laura Cossu

Class Teacher

Hello and Welcome to Year 1 at St Newlyn East!

My name is Miss Cossu and I have worked in Year 1 at St Newlyn East Learning Academy for five years now. I absolutely love it! Before working here I was a teacher at Trenance Learning Academy, where I also taught Year 1. As well as teaching my lovely class, I also lead Key Stage 1 Literacy and Modern Foreign Languages and I am a Specialist Leader in Education (SLE) for Phonics.

When I’m not at school I enjoy spending time with my friends and family, especially when the weather is sunny and we can have walks on the beach or in the beautiful Cornish countryside! When I get the chance in the school holidays I also like to visit Italy and Sardinia, where I have lots of family.

Summer Term- Beach School

Our Summer Term Topic is Beach School. Over the coming weeks we will be visiting Holywell, Newquay Harbour, the Huer's Hut and the River Gannel. We will be learning all about the our local history, exploring nature to discover our local wildlife and learning how to stay safe on the beach. We will also be learning about the role of the RNLI. Beach School is an exciting opportunity for our Year 1 pupils to learn through hands-on experiences and to really benefit from living in such a beautiful part of the world. Our Beach School sessions will run every other Tuesday and are led by Mr Karl Fice-Thompson and Miss Cossu. Please see the document below for key information.
Our Year 1 curriculum is designed to make the transition from Foundation to Key Stage 1 as smooth as possible for the children through creative and practical activities that will capture their imaginations.
